POLICY JUSTIFIED

LABOUR IN BRITAIN

PART IN GOVERNMENT

(Reed. June 3, 2.30 p.m.) LONDON, June 2. The fortieth annual conference of the Labour Party opened with over GOO delegates assembled. Mr. J. Walker, M.P., who presided, said events had proved that the decision to enter the Government was right. Labour realised that if Britain were defeated it would mean disastei to Labour. Professor Harold Laski, in a speech on behalf of the executive, threatened that Labour would no longer cooperate with the BBC and Ministry of Information unless more consideration was given to Labour’s viewpoint. Delegates complained that the Ministry was being used principally as a medium for Tory propaganda. Professor Laski said that British propaganda to occupied territories was likely to become “proper gander for proper geese’’ and to play little part in influencing the minds of the people. A Labour representative should be appointed to the Ministry with a voice in vital decisions.
