Postal Officials’ Busy Days

Yesterday and to-day were the busiest days of the year for postal officials handling social security levies, social security payments in respect of income other than salary and wages, and motor registrations. Though the amount of money taken over the counters yesterday was slightly lower than for the biggest day last year, the number of applications was believed to be larger, and there was still a strong flow of business today. In the money-order office, clerks were dealing with three queues of people anxious to quit their responsibilities in connection with social security for the time being, and this morning an additional counter was provided in the parcels office. Four clerks wex - e working at top speed at the motor registration counter on the first floor, and the queues before them seemed never to grow less. A feature of the social security business was the number of individuals who brought in several books each, and who consequently held up the waiting applicants behind them. Arrangements have been made to keep the offices open this evening, between 7 and 8 o’clock, to handle the overflow business.
