BIRTHDAY TOURNAMENTS RUGBY PATRIOTIC MATCH SCHOOLS TO TAKE PART Several sporting tournaments will be played on Monday, the King s Birthday, so that those on holiday in Gisborne will be well catered for in the way of sporting attractions. The choice will be between Rugby, soccer, 1 hockey and basketball. The Rugby attraction will be a match between Army and Poverty Bay teams, and the net takings on the gates will be handed to the rehabilitation fund for servicemen returning to Gisborne. The Army team will consist of Territorials, those awaiting a call to camp, and men at present on leave from camps. The teams arc of good strength and should be well matched. As the curtain-raiser to the main Rugby fixture there will be a seven-a-side tournament for school teams. Two teams of younger schoolboys will ' be seen in a match at half-time. The referees' appointments are:—-Curtain-raiser. —-Messrs. F. Bayliss and J. Green. Touch judges: Messrs. E. R. Gladding and I. N. Charles. Army v. Poverty Bay.—Mr. K. R. Waite. Touch judges: Messrs. H. Hunter and A. E. Ingram. Soccer Tournament Starting at 10.30 a.m. on Monday there will be a schoolboys’ seven-a-side soccer tournament for the Fairclough Cup, and the final game in the series will be played as a curtainraiser to the Kyne Cup game between the Thistle and Eastern Union senior teams. Hockey Fixtures Men, women and girls will lake part in the tournament under the auspices of the Poverty Bay Hockey Association on Monday. Match play will start in the morning and will be continued throughout the day. It will be the first appearance of schoolgirls’ teams in the King’s Birthday fixtures. Basketball Arrangements Players to take part in the first rounds of the seven-a-side tournament to be conducted by the Poverty Bay Basketball Association will be required to report at the courts at 8.45 a.m. on Monday. The games will be continued throughout the day. Twenty-eight teams have been nominated for the tournament, and they are all from the district. Owing to the petrol restrictions teams were unable to'make the trip from the East Coast. It was decided at a recent executive meeting to make a small charge for all players and spectators, and the march past and official opening ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. The teams taking part will be H.S.O.G. (3), St. Mary’s (6), Tuis, Public Service, Mangapapa (2), Nurses, Marathon, High School (7), Ayton House, Kiwi, Rata, Eastwoods (2), and Cash Stores. Following is the draw: Cash Stores v. H.S.O.G. Al, No. 1 court; Eastwoods C v. St. Mary’s A, No. 2; Rata v. Public Service, No. 3; Kiwi v. Nurses, No. 4. St. Mary’s B 1 v. High School A, No. 1 court; Marathon v. St. Mary’s 82, No. 2; Mangapapa A v. H.S.O.G. B, No. 3; Tuis v. Eastwoods B, No. 4. H.S.O.G. A2 v. High School B, No. 1 court; Ayton House v. St. Mary’s Cl, No. 2; High School F v. St. Mary’s C 3, Nd? 3; High School D v. High School C, No. 4. Mangapapa C v. High School E, No. 1 court; St. Mary’s C2 v. High School G, No. 2.
