“ADEQUATE STEPS”

DUTCH EAST INDIES TRADE CONVERSATIONS (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. May 31. 9 a.m.) TOKIO, May 30. The Nichinichi Shimbun and the Yomiuri Shimbun, in vehement editorials, to-day reiterated the “purely economic nature” of the Japanese proposals to the Netherlands East Indies and gave angry warnings that “adequate steps” may have to be taken by Japan in the eyent of the conversations collapsing. The Nichinichi Shimbun emphasised that Japan's southward policy would not be affected in the least either by the international position of Japan or whatever attitude the Netherlands East Indies authorities may decide to adopt. The official spokesman denied that the Japanese sought British good offices in the Netherlands East Indies deadlock, although admitting it was possible that the British authorities bad been requested, to place no obstacles in Japan’s way. The meeting of the British Ambassador, Sir Robert Craigie, yesterday with the Japanese Foreign viceMinister is said to have been concerned with economic matters between Britain and Japan only.
