NEWFOUNDLAND’S AID

SEAMEN & LUMBERJACKS APPEAL FOR RECRUITS (British Official Wireless ) Reed. 10 a.m, RUGBY, May 29. Newfoundland’s recruiting week, now in full swing, has received support from the Dominions Secretary, Viscount Cranborne, and the Minister of War. Captain H. D. Margesson, and the Minister of Transport, Lord Leathers. Lord Crannorne telegraphed: “From the outbreak of the present war the people of Newfoundland have shown a desire to take the fullest possible part in the fight in which the Empire is engaged against the forces ranged on the side of aggression and the destruction of liberty. The signal assistance which Newfoundland has given in providing men for the fighting services, the mercantile marine, and for forestry work in this country has been of the greatest value. We have been proud to welcome these volunteers to the shores of the Mother Country and know they have been giving every proof of the characteristic hardwood courage of the men of Newfoundland. I have no doubt that this assistance will continue to the fullest extent which the resources of the island permit." Lord Leathers’ message said: VA large number of Newfoundland seamen and fishermen have already joined the Merchant Navy and are helping to win the war by arduous and dangerous services in merchant ships. We have greatly welcomed that help, but we need still more. Our victory depends on the men of the Merchant Navy and on their ability to bring to this country the precious cargoes needed for every part of our war effort. The seaman with all his skill in overcoming the dangers of the sea can do nothing more. We must have men as well as ships, and I appeal for still more Newfoundlanders to answer that call.”
