PHYSICAL INSTRUCTION
WAIROA UNITS’ PROGRESS (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. Major J. O. Scott, area commander of the Home Guard, Wairoa, accompanied by Mr. H. Le Bas, physical welfare officer, Gisborne, and SergeantMajor G. H. Sowden, visited the Opoutama and Mahia Home Guard units at the week-end. At Opoutama a complete course of physical training was given by Mr. Le Bas, a lecture by Mr. Sowden, and a talk by Major Scott. Despite rough travelling conditions, the journey to Mahia was made and practically the whole afternoon was given to physical training by Mr. Le Bas. An endeavour was made to give this unit enough instruction to last the winter as it will be impossible to make ihe journey for a few months. Discussing the matter later, with general reference to work in the Wairoa County, Mr. Le Bas was emphatic on the enthusiasm, of the county units, which was borne out by the men he had seen that day. All the Wairo|. County has been covered now an® as soon as possible the second visit will commence. On Saturday Major Scott, Captain J. H. Turnbull, area adjutant, Napier, and Mr. F. H. Carnie, adjutant, Wairoa Battalion, visited Home Guard units at Nuhaka and on Sunday Major Scott went on to Opoutama and Mahia, while Captain Turnbull and Mr Carnie visited Te Reinga and Ruakituri. They expressed themselves as being very well pleased with the progress the units were making.
