POPPY DAY FUND

APPEAL NEXT WEEK SELLERS’ AID INVITED R.S.A. RELIEF PLANS

Preparations for the annual Poppy Day appeal are being completed by llie Gisborne Returned Soldiers' Association, and the sale of poppy blooms, to he conducted on Friday, April 19. is expected to yield a return at least approaching the record made in 1940. when the gross returns exceeded £585 for the town and district.

Supplies of blooms have been dis patched to the sub-association:-throughout the district, and to a number of private residents who in the past have acted as distributing agents for the association. The requisitions received from the distributors indicate a greater demand than ever, and the prospect of a worthy response to the annual appeal.

For Relief Purposes Only

How necessary is the raising of money for relief under fhe supervision of the Returned Soldiers' Association is indicated by the fact that £615 was expended by the Gisborne execuli.e during the 1940-41 financial year from funds raised by the association as distinct from those made available from the Canteen Funds Board and other sources. Poppy Day funds are used exclusively for the relief of distress, and not for administration purposes. To ensure the success of this year’s appeal, the executive desires to have the assistance of as many sellers as possible. For years it has been the aim to cover the town and suburbs completely with the Poppy Day selling organisation, but to date that objective has not been reached. Those who can spare even an hour or two to help the appeal on Friday of next week will be rendering valuable service.

The Poppy Day depot in Gisborne this year will be in a shop adjoining Le Grand Cafe, Gladstone road. Offers of assistance in selling will be received with appreciation either at the office of the Gisborne Returned Soldiers' Association or at the depot. Those who wish to make their offers during the Easter period are recommended to communicate with Mr. R. ,1. Clark, Fox street.
