FOUR DAYS’ CAMP
M i LIT AR Y R ESERVISTS INTENSIVE TRAINING EMPHASIS ON FIELDCRAFT SHOWGROUNDS FIXTURE
An advance party of No. 8 (Gisborne) National Military Reserve Company will take up quarters at the Gisborne showgrounds this evening, in preparation for a four days’ encampment during which the company will receive intensive training covering a considerable range of infantry work.
The main body of the company will enter camp to-morrow morning, and .he training syllabus will commence at 9 a.m., with a full day’s work ahead. There will be little idle time for the members of the unit throughout Raster, for the syllabus is a fairly heavy one; and if the weather continues fine the period in camp should be of the utmost value in building up the efficiency of the company. Operations with Home Guard Emphasis will be given to tieldcral't and defensive work throughout the four days' camp, and an endeavour will be made to develop further the skill of the company in the use of ground and cover. One night will be given to operations in conjunction with the Home Guard, and Sunday afternoon’s schedule will include a church parade, at which Cook County and Waikohu County Guardsmen will take part.
County sub-area commands of the Home Guard have arranged to conduct a school for non-commissioned officers on the showgrounds, the trainees attending each day. As far as possible, they and the National Military Reserve Company will cooperate in training, and in the use of the available equipment. This arrangement should be of the utmost value to the Guardsmen, whose training to date lias been hampered by a dearth of equipment as well as of instructors.
The interest taken by the executive of the Poverty Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Association in the camp arrangements has been much appreciated by the reservists, who recognise the advantages offered by the showgrounds as a camping site.
