THREE MONTHS’ GAOL
PACIFIST SENTENCED OBSTRUCTION OF POLICE (Tor Pniss Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. A sentence of three months’ imprisonment with hard labour was imposed on John Robert Hamerton, aged 28, a fibrous plasterer, by the magistrate, Mr. J. H. Luxford, in the Police Court to-day on a charge of obstructing Superintendent Lopdell in the execution of his duty. On a further charge of conducting a meeting prohibited under the public safety emei'gency regulations lie pleaded not guilty and was committed for trial.
Evidence was given by police witnesses that Hamerton on Friday night spoke at a public meeting under the auspices of the Christian Pacifist Society, and refused to stop when asked to do so by the police.
Hamerton said he could not have done otherwise than speak what lie believed to be the message from Jesus Christ in relation to the war.
