CLOTHING SHORTAGE

PROSPECT IN AUSTRALIA HUGE DEFENCE ORDERS SYDNEY, April 5, A clothing shortage so acute that within four to six months many lines of civilian clothes may be unobtainable is predicted in Australia as a result of a 90 per cent change-over by the clothing industry from civil to military production.

Many millions of pounds’ worth of: civilian orders for cloth, knitted goods, including sweaters and socks, and blankets cannot be delivered. It is customary in the trade to make overcoats at the start of the year, but orders of cloth from the mills have not been delivered. Many mills will not promise delivery of orders before April, 1942. Although fewer uniforms arc required at present for Australian troops, the Government has accepted orders for the defence forces in India of a total value of more than £1,750,000. Initial orders will be placed at a fixed price for 90 per cent of tire quantities required, allowing for completion of this portion of the order within 33 to 36 weeks. By this means it will be possible to introduce new firms at a later date to complete the order.
