LINEN FLAX CROP

SUCCESS IN SOUTHLAND Of the area of 2400 acres of linen flax grown in Southland this season, only, two small areas, totalling 16 acres, of accepted flax, remain to be pulled. The season has been ideal for the harvesting of practically all the crop, and the results have been highly satisfatcory. About one-third was rejected because of shortness of the fibre, resulting from dry weather during the greater part of the growing period. A number of sample stacks has been carted in, and the straw and seed ratio determined. At the Winton factory about 50 tons of material have been laid out for dew retting. The scutching machinery has now arrived at the factory and will be fitted up immediately. The Otautau tank-retting factory is not as advanced as the Winton factory,- but six tanks, each handling six tons of material, have been constructed and are almost ready for use. At this factory about 36 tons of straw will be retted every two and ahalf days.

Some farmers whose crops have been rejected for fibre have obtained remunerative returns from the seed alone, the grower being paid £35 . a ton for pure seed. The seed yields in Southland have been extremely heavy in comparison with those obtained in Canterbury.
