PROBLEM OF RUSSIA
MR. MATSUOKA’S MISSION DISCUSSIONS IN EUROPE LONDON. April 5. According to reliable information reaching the correspondent of The Times on the Italian frontier, the Japanese Foreign Minister, Mr. Matsuoka, when visiting Rome, frankly stated Japan’s problems in the Far East if the conflict spreads. One of the main difficulties is Russia’s role, which Mr. Matsuoka expects to discuss in Moscow.
Even if Russia continues to keep out of Hie war, her attitude would be very important if she could be persuaded to accelerate or increase her transport between Europe and the Far East. Mr. Matsuoka and Signor Mussolini also discussed Japan’s role if Yugoslavia and the United States became involved in the war. He explicitly stated the maximum support which could be expected from Japan. They are also reported to have discussed economic, military and naval co-opera-lion, with special reference to Africa. An exchange of Italian and Japanese technical missions, including military and naval missions, was also considered.
