COPRA AS PIG-FEED
FIRST SHIPMENT TO N.Z. SUPPLEMENTARY FODDER GRAIN SHORTAGE MET (Pei' Presß Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, this. clay. Copra for feeding pigs is now being distributed from New Plymouth. It comprises roughly one-third of the first shipment—-about 500 tons—which has been brought to New Zealand for the purpose. The remainder is to be stored at a convenient centre by the Internal Marketing Department, which is supervising the distribution.
The decision to import copra was made when a shortage of grains from Australia threatened to interfere seriously with the production of baconer pigs at that time keenly sought by the United Kingdom Government.
Though . restrictions on baconers have sence been imposed, farmers will still require some form of supplementary fodder. Other shipments are to be made for other pig-rais.ng districts. The Pacific islands i;a\e lost almost the whole overseas market lor copra because of the war and exports to New Zealand will be of yrea: importance to them.
