PROBLEM IN LONDON More than half a damaged bank note must be left, and the whole of the sentence, “I promise to pay the bearer on demand £1 (or 10s),” before a fresh one can be issued, states the Daily Mail, London, This announcement was made by the General Post Office regarding the replacement of notes damaged in the firebomb raid on the City of London. At least one-third of the chief cashier’s signature must be readable. When these conditions are not fulfilled the notes are passed to the Bank of England for decision.
