SHEARERS AND SERVICE
REPLY TO MR. MADDISON In answer to a letter from Mr. G. A. Maddison, chairman of the Hawke’s Bay Man-Power Committee, the Director of National Service, Mr. J. S. Hunter, has replied as follows: "It is true that shearing has been done this year with reasonable expedition, but the work has been considerably assisted by a period of fine weather which enabled the work to be carried out more quickly than in normal seasons.” said Mr. Hunter. "But for this fact, there would have been serious difficulties on many stations and farms. A large number of older men came forward for shearing this year and were granted union membership, but it was obvious that rftany of them were too old to shear satisfactorily and the output was small. "In investigating cases of farm workers, called in overseas ballots, therefore, it is most desirable that information should be obtained regarding the ability of the men to undertake shearing work in season,” concludes the letter.
