“YELLOW PERIL”
RAGWORT IN H.B. COUNCILLORS ALARMED That there existed in Hawke's Bay a "yellow peril” in the form of a prevalence of ragwort, was a statement made at a meeting ol the Hawke's Bay County Council, when considerable alarm was expressed at the growth of noxious weeds. Unless definite steps are taken to combat the spread, the council considers that it might have to administer the Act itself.
Mr. H. M. Glazbrook said ragwort was well over the back country and was rapidly coming down to ihe plains. It was extraordinary the apathy that was being shown by many settlers toward noxious weeds.
“If nothing is done nationally, the noxious weeds will work us all out in the end.” said Mr. E. H. Beamish, who also condemned what he termed the “rank apathy of settlers ” “There is a circle of ragwort round Hawke’s Bay and we must try and push the Government into doing something,” said Mr. S. M. Palmer.
The question of whether the council should take over the administration of the Act was mentioned, but it was decided to defer this for a month, inquiries being made in the meantime to ascertain what powers the council possesses to enforce the clearance of weeds
