GOVERNOR-GENERAL WELLINGTON ENTHUSIASM TOWN HALL RECEPTION CONSTANT APPLAUSE (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Rarely has Wellington accorded visitors as demonstrative and hearty a welcome as her leading citizens gave to the Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall and Lady Newall last night. The Town Hall was crowded for the civic reception when the Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, presented Their Excellencies with a formal illuminated address of greeting and expressed the pleasure felt in the city that so distinguished a man had been sent to New Zealand as His Majesty’s representative. The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, also joined in the welcome. The scene was a brilliant one. Leaders of the church and State and of the armed forces, as well as men and women prominent in every walk of public life were present. Full evening dress with decorations was worn and the scene was lively .with brilliant frocks, uniforms, glittering orders, medals and jewellery. A large crowd included many distinguished people. The Mayor and Mayoress accompanied Their Excellencies into the hall. The Mayor wore an ermine gown and the golden chain of office over his evening clothes. The GovernorGeneral was in ordinary evening clothes with decorations, in contrast to his previous appearances in the air force uniform. Lady Newall carried a bouquet of beautiful pink carnations.
The reception was remarkable for the constant enthusiasm and applause of the public in the body of the hall.
