White, Mr. and Mrs. A. Broadhurst, Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Veitch. Mr. and Mrs. D. Hall-Crease, and Misses H. Veitch and V. Dodd. 99 Years Old Her ninety-ninth birthday was celebrated last week by Mrs. Elizabebth Munro, Tauranga. Mrs. Munro, who for many years has been living with Mrs. J. B. Munro, enjoys good health except for failing eyesight. Mrs. Munro was born in Lossiemouth, Scotland. Engagements Apperley—Denton,—An engagement is announced between Allan Harold, second son of Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Apperley, Hastings, and Esther May, fifth daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. Denton, Perry street, Gisborne. Poole —Sawyer.—An engagement is announced between flub-Lieutenant Owen Francis Alfred, R.N.V.R., third son of Mr. and Mrs. Poole, Khandallah, Wellington, and Nancy Lorraine, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Sawyer, Gisborne. Prelude to Dance A jolly dinner party was given by Mrs. A. W. Mossman at her home at Hangaroa on Saturday night prior to the annual dance of the Waerenga-o-kuri Sports Club, Roses and hydrangeas were used to decorate the drawing-room, and on the enclosed verandah, where dinner was served, orange-shaded marigolds were chosen for the adornment of the table. The hostess was wearing a smart frock of white ninon printed in a floral design in gay colours Among the guests invited were Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Fitzgerald, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Maude; Mesdames R. Pittar (Whatatutu), and D. Sutherland; Misses E. Millar, C. Oman, J. Wauchop and M. Scott; Messrs. Law (Tiniroto), and W. Sutherland. Sports Club Dance The popularity of the annual dance held by the Waerenga-o-kuri Sports Club, as a finale to its sports meeting, was demonstrated again on Saturday night, when a merry crowd of revellers filled the Waerenga-o-kuri Hall. Red, white and blue streamers were suspended overhead, and greenery adorned the wall spaces.

The music was supplied by Mrs. W. Thomson’s orchestra, and a delicious supper was provided by the ladies of the district. /

Successful Yankee Tournament A successful Yankee tournament, in which members of the various local clubs participated, was organised by the Gisborne Lawn Tennis Club on Saturday afternoon for the benefit of its funds. The fixture drew large entries, and the weather was all that could be desired. The finalists were Miss E. Benson, Partnered bv Mr. Simpson and the Misses P. Reed and N. Broadhurst. the former pair emerging the winners. Afternoon tea was served in the pavilion. Among the women players were Mesdames W. Neal. Brown. Waple. Heighwa.v. Teece. Bruce. Watts, Stokes, Ancell. Pocock, Henderson. Heeney Turbitt. Hansen, Dunphy. Thom, ’ Hacche, Olsen, Corkery. Stevenson, and Milne; Misses M. Foster, Roddick, H. Lane. Benson, Simpson. Newman, P. Activities There was a fair attendance'of members and friends at a social evening organised recently by the Tamarau Women’s Institute. A delightful programme, arranged by the members of the drama circle and supervised by Mr. Lord, included games, musical items and dance numbers. Vocal solos were contributed by Miss Joyce Gray, and Mr. Lord was seen in an amusing impersonation. Mrs. Mogford acted as pianist and was warmly thanked for her services. Supper was served by the members.

Nine members and one visitor were present at the monthly meeting of the drama circle held at the home of Mrs. Mogford. The chair was taken by Mrs. Forman. Iti was decided to organise a series of concerts during the year, each programme to include a production by the drama circle. Two plays were read and thoroughly enjoyed. It was announced that the circle would meet in future on the second Tuesday in each month. Thanks were extended to Mrs. Mogford for the use of her home.

Mrs. Mason presided over an attendance of 16 members at the monthly meeting of the gardening circle held at the home of Mrs. Balantyn'\ Arrangements were discussed for the garden party which is to take place at the home of Mrs. Rhodes. The roll call next month will take the form of an exchange of plants and cuttings. Competitions set down for the next meeting included a hand posy,, arranged in the prettiest manner, and the spelling of the names of flowers. A meeting of the arts and crafts circle was held in St. Paul’s Hall, 15 members being present. Suggestions were received by Mesdames Graham and Nasmith in connection with their stall at the garden party. An interesting demonstration on the making of a humpty was given by Mrs. Twigley, who was complimented on her excellent work. Gisborne Meeting of W.D.F.U. The first meeting of the Gisboi'ne branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union since the holiday recess was held in the Bon Accord Lounge on Friday afternoon. Mrs. G. W. Humphreys presided over an attendance of 30 members, and also representatives of the Tamarau and Takitimu Women’s Institutes and Poverty Bay Gardening Circle. Two new members were welcomed. Mrs. Humphreys reported on the activities of the sewing committee and helpers in making garments for refugees. In this connection a letter was received from the New Zealand High Commissioner in London, Mr. W. J. Jordan, in regard to a former dispatch, in which he expressed appreciation of the work. The principal business of the meeting was the making of arrangements for the forthcoming visit of Miss Johnston, horticultural tutor, under, the adult education scheme, which was being organised in the district through the co-ordinating committee of country women—Women’s Division, Farmers’ Union, and Women’s Institute. It was stated that Miss Johnston’s itinerary, which commenced at Motu on February 17, would conclude, after covering a wide field, at the Whimata Valley on March 1.

Prior, to visiting the Coast, Miss Johnston will address a morning and afternoon session, weather permitting, in the garden at the home of Miss W. Lysnar on Monday, March 3. It was agreed that should the weather prove unfavourable, the meetings would take place at the Bon Accord Lounge. The morning lecture will be devoted to the cultivation of vegetables, and in the afternoon a new method of preserving fruit and vegetables will be dealt with, i Attention was drawn to the fact that, as previously advertised, there would be a small charge for admission to cover the cost of the tutor’s transport, and the hope was expressed that any woman interested would take advantage of the opportunity afforded. It was mentioned that further particulars could be obtained from Miss J. Renner, Adams’ chambers. Mrs. A. C. Coleman, who was the guest of the branch for the afternoon, was heard in several vocal solos, and later contributed the W.D.F.U. song. A vote of thanks to Mrs. Coleman was carried by acclamation., The monthly competition, “The best in my garden,” was judged by Mesdames E. Woodrow and B.
