Women’s Institutes

WAINGAKE There was a large attendance of members at the February meeting of the Waingake Women’s Institute, when two visitors were present. During the afternoon arrangements were made for soldiers’ parcels. The roll call was a suggestion for the programme. The competition for the best pikelets was won by Mrs. F. Shanks. The winner of the competition for the best bloom was Mrs. H. R. Shanks, who displayed a double pink gerbera. Six months’ points prizes of institute spoons were awarded to Mesdames E. Wykes and H. R. Shanks. NGATAPA The latest meeting of the Ngatapa Women’s Institute was held in the Ngatapa Hall on February 13, and was very well attended. Misses Elsie Turnbull and Orr were welcomed as visitors. Arrangements were made for sending two soldiers’ parcels. A sale of fruit and vegetables met with a keen demand. The competition collection of four vegetables, resulted: Mrs. F. E. Humphreys, 1; Miss R. Monckton, 2; Miss L. Williams, 3. Highest points for the year’s competitions were shared by Mrs. F. E. Humphreys and Miss R. Monckton. Letters were received from two institutes in England. The hostesses were Mesdames W. A. Dods and W. E. Maude. TE KARAKA Members of the Te Karaka Women’s Institute held their first meeting of the new year in the Waikohu Hall on February 13, Mrs. J. V. Castles presiding. Before the commencement of business, all stood in silence as a mark of respect to the passing of a valued member, Mrs. J. Tuke. The balance sheet of the Christmas fair held in December was bers expressing their gratification at the splendid financial results. Arrangements were made for the field day, which will be conducted by Miss Johnston in the Waikohu Hall on Friday, February 21. The Puha and Kanakanaia institutes will attend, and members of the public are invited. The packing of soldiers’ parcels for the quarterly quota was discussed, members donating the articles for each parcel. It was decided to resume sewing for refugees, and each member was asked to bring a repaired article to the March meeting, which will be held at the home of Mrs. M. Clayton, the roll call to be “A reel of cotton.’’ Mesdames C. Bull and H. Allan were the tea hostesses. TAMARAU Twenty-four members attended the monthly meeting of the Tamarau Women’s Institute held in St. Paul’s Hall. Mrs. C. McDonald, who presided, welcomed those present. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs. Rhodes for the use of her home for a garden party to raise funds for soldiers’ parcels. Mrs. Gray was nominated as delegate for the annual council meeting, to be held in April. Reports were received from all the circles that they were progressing satisfactorily. It was decided unanimously that Mrs. McDonald should carry on for another year as president, and that verbal nominations for the committee would be accepted at the next meeting.

A most amusing, debate, “Should Women Adopt Painted Legs,” was thoroughly enjoyed. Mrs. McKessar acted as adjudicator. Competitions resuled: Tomato Relish. —Mrs. Price, 1; Mrs. Mogford, 2; Mrs. Oxenham, 3. Bed Jacket From Boiling Silk.—Mrs. Markie, 1; Mrs Mogford, 2. Flowers. —Mrs. Twigley, 1; Mrs. Rhodes, 2; Mrs. McKessar, 3, The hostesses for next month will be Mesdames Rothwell, Tasker, Twigley, and Hall. NUHAKA At the February meeting of the Nuhaka Womens institute Mrs. Bartlett presided over an unusually small attendance owing to several members being absent from the district. The prospective visit of Miss Johnson, Sarah Ann Rhodes Scholar of Victoria College, was discussed and names taken of those wishing to avail ■ hemselves of her classes. Nominations for new committee for the new year also were taken. The “Bring and Buy” stall for funds' to augment (ha sinking fund brougnt a satisfactory result and cash was again generously received for soldiers’ parcels. The competitions resulted: — Mrs. Haukon, 1; Mrs. McKenzie, 2; Mrs. Stewart, 3. Onions: Mrs. Mclntyre, 1 and 2. Tomatoes: Mrs. Stewart, 1; Mrs. Mclntyre, 2 and 3. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Hauton and McKenzie.

The institute gardening circle met on February 5 at the residence of Mrs V. Bluck and members much enjoyed viewing her garden. Mi's. Stewart, the president, read an interesting article on “Work this month in the garden,” A competition, bowl of annuals, resulted: Mrs. Stewart, 1; Mrs. Bluck, 2. Mrs. Stewart also won another competition arranged by the hostess, Mrs. Bluck. The next gardening circle meeting will be held at Mrs. (Stewart’s in March, when the competitions will be a lady’s shoulder spray and a gent’s button-hole.

TAKITIMU The monthly meeting of the Takitimu Women’s Institute was held on February' 20. the president, presiding over a "good attendance of members and one visitor. A vote of condolence was passed with two members who had suffered bereavements recently. Nominations were received for the annual meeting. It was agreed to make four parcels for soldiers this month. Being the institute birthday, a special lunch was served and a pleasant social half-hour spent. A special vote of thanks was accorded the secretary for the use of her home for the occasion. Next month's will be the annual meeting and will be held in the institute rooms on March 20. KANAKANAIA There was a very good attendance at the meeting of the Kanakanaia Women’s Institute held at the home of Mrs. J. W. Wilson and presided over by Miss B. Orr. Members all brought large parcels of clothing to be forwarded to the refugee fund. The baby’s layette was completed by the donation of more articles and a vote of thanks was passed to Mrs. Glenisler for donating a baby’s shawl while on a visit to the district. Six parcels for soldiers were packed ready for delivery. The sales table did unusually well, members donating and buying cakes and vegetables. A dainty afternoon tea was served. OPOUTAMA The Opoulama Women's Institute held its monthly meeting in the picture hall on. February 19. Miss Bowen presiding over a fair attendance. Two minutes’ silence w;fs observed in honour of Miss Herbert’s father, who was killed in action. Messrs. Cameron, Mills and Jobson were welcomed as visitors. The roll call was nominations for the.coming year, and the motto “'No gift is more helpful ,than a gift of appreciation.” It was decided to have Miss Johnstone's field day on March 28. Competitions resulted: Sponge Cake.—Mrs. Lancaster, 1; Mesdames Foster and Short. 2. Flowers. —Mesdames Ailon and Lancaster, 1; Mrs. Foster. 3; Mesdames Jobson and Short. 4. Mystery Parcel. —Mrs. J. Lancaster, 1. Parade. —Mrs. Charmane, 1. MAUNGARONGQ At the February meeting of the Maungarorigo Women's Institute, which was held at the home of the president. Mrs. R. Walker, the opportunity was taken by Mrs. Wicksteed, Ruatoria, to introduce to the members present Mesdames P. F. Barker and Mazengarb, president and secretary respectively of the Poverty Bay Federation of Women’s Institutes. The visitors hoped that the Maungarongo institute would send at least Lvo delegates to the next council meeting in Gisborne. War work was one of tiie main topics of discussion. Two parcels for soldiers were handed to the patriotic council for dispatch. One new member, Mrs. A. Richardson, was enrolled. The roll call was “What would you do if you won £20?” The competitions, which were judged by Mesdames Barker and Mazengarb; resulted: —Sewing, Child’s Frock—Miss Mary Ehau, 1. The president made a donation of 6s to the federation on behalf of the Maungarongo institute. The “bring and buy” table did brikk business. Mrs. Wicksteed presented Mrs. Walker with an institute teaspoon. Afternoon tea was served.
