IMPORTS BY BRITAIN PROSPECTS NOT HOPEFUL i Reed. Dec. 16, 9 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 15. Fruit importers :>i present are uot hopeful over the prospects of New Zealand and Australian apple shipments in 1941. Some of the largest dealers fear that the recent speech by the Minister of Food, Lord Wooltan, means that no shipping space will'be available, but point out that conditions may improve within the next two months.
It is recalled that there was similar pessimism at this time last year, bui a lair quantity was shipped. In the meanwhile apples are becoming a luxury. British supplies are dwindling and shops are charging Is, Is 4d, and some even Is 8d a pouna for dessert apples.
It is expected that shipments ol canned fruits and also jam will continue to be restricted, but less drastically than apples, as they do not require refrigeration.
