BOWLS IN GISBORNE

OFFICERS* TOURNEY POVERTY BAY WINNERS FOUR TIE FOR SECOND The annual tournament for secretaries and treasurers of clubs affiliated to the Gisborne-East Coast Bowling Centre was played during the week-end, with an entry of eight pairs, two clubs, unfortunately, being unable to send representatives. The Poverty Bay pair had the most successful day, A. Boys and E. V. Simpson scoring four wins and having only one loss. Tokomaru Bay, Kahuna, Tolaga Bay, and the centre executive pairs each scored three wins during the day, and tied for second. Tolaga Bay won the play-off. The clubs and representatives were: Poverty Bay, A. Boys and E. V. Simpson (s); Tolaga Bay, E. Harries and 11. L. Tempest (s); Tokomaru Bay, Alexander and Short (s); Waikaremoana, McDougall and Prior (s); Kahutia, Weatherley and Vail (s); Te Karaka, Clayden and Bull (s); Gisborne, Pyke and Baldrey (s); Gis-borne-East Coast Centre, Robertson and Williams (s). Players enjoyed the tournament keenly, and country members were the guests of Mr. J. K. Popple, president of the centre. KAHUTIA BIRTHDAY TOURNEY A King’s Birthday tourhament held on the Kahutia club’s greert yesterday attracted 14 rinks, the winning rinit oeing skipped by R. Branch, who had ~hree wins and one loss in section play. Two others with the same numDer of wills were H. E. Bright and P. Fischbach, . who were eliminated in short post-section games. FISKEN CUP A Fisken Cup game between Kahutia and Te Karaka was commenced on :he Kahutia green on Saturday, but owing to continuous rain setting in play was held up after the completion of the eighth head. The-game will be concluded on a date to be arranged. GISBORNE CLUB Forty-eight bowlers took part in yesterday’s progressive pairs tournament on the Gisborne greens; which were in excellent condition, and some interesting matches .resulted. J In A Section, F. Roberts and E. R. Beckett won outright with five wins each in the leads and skips divisions respectively. W. Keitbf's four wins gave him an outright win among the leads in B Section, while A. F. Salmon, B. Butcher and L. Balfour tied with four wins each in the skips’ section. After beating Salmon in the play-off, Butcher lost to Balfour. In the final, Roberts and Beckett (s) defeated Keith and Balfour (s), 7-5.
