AUSTRALIA’S PART

DAKAR NAVAL FIGHT FRENCH VESSEL SUNK (Reed. Nov. 25, 2.40 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Nov. 25. Letters received by relatives from ratings say that the cruiser H.M.A.S. Australia sank the French destroyer Audaceiux and captured the cruiser Gloire in the naval engagement off Dakar in September. Botji the latter were among the six French warships which escaped through Gibraltar to Dakar the week before General de Gaulle's attempt to land there. A Sydney message states that the Minister for the Navy, Mr. W. M. Hughes, confirms the report that the Australia was at Dakar, but says he has no knowledge of an engagement with French warships.
