DEFERRED SERVICE

MAJORITY OF APPEALS TERRITORIAL BALLOT MAN-POWER COMMITTEE A majority of the territorial conscripts on whose behalf appeals were lodged with the district man-power committee had their obligatory service with home-defence units deferred as a result of yesterday's sittings of the committee, the personnel of which comprises Messrs. F. R. Ball, chairman, J. E. Benson, and C. E. Bickford. Eight out of 11 appeals dealt with were either adjourned sine die or dismissed with qualifications which will relieve the men of service for periods ranging from three to six months. This group represented about half the total number of appellants who survived the medical examination for territorial service. About 70 notices of appeal were lodged, but the greater number of those who had intended to appeal were relieved of their difficulties in that respect by their failure to meet the physical standards for homedefence service. During the latter part of yesterday's sitting five cases were dealt with, two being dismissed summarily and one adjourned sine die, while the other two were granted postponements for business or family reasons. Hairdresser’s Staff Problem V. M. Anderson was appealed for on the ground of undue hardship, the appeal being made by his employer, Mr, IVI. J. Owen, hairdresser. The employer stated in a letter to the manpower committee that he had lost one employee out of three, to the territorials, and the loss of another would cause undue business hardship, and to replace the man would necessitate bringing another man from outside the district, there being no hairdressers unemployed in Gisborne. The appeal was dismissed, subject to the appellant not being called up until December 31.

Ronald Thomas Duncan, a shepherd, was appealed for by his father, Mr. Thomas Duncan, on the .grounds of public interest and hardship. The father asked for a postponement until January,’l94l, in order that he might get his second shearing done. The appeal was dismissed, subject to the man not being called up before December 31. Fitter’s Appeal Dismissed Cyril Edward Tune, an engineer, appealed on the ground of public interest, and stated that he was employed in the Gisborne Refrigerating Company’s works at Kaiti and had just concluded his apprenticeship at his trade. The management of the Gisborne Refrigerating Company intimated that it did not intend to appeal against the draft unless the employee was absolutely essential, and would not appeal in this instance. The appellant stated that he had wished to volunteer for the Air Force, but had been advised by his immediate superiors in the works to remain at his present employment, which they regarded as essential. The appellant did not wish to avoid service, and asked only for a postponement' of six months. The appeal was dismissed. Dairyman’s Responsibilities li. F. Ballantyne, dairy-farmer, appealed against the draft on grounds of hardship. He stated that he milked 35 cows and supplied a milk vendor daily. Appellant was a single man, working with the aid of his elderly father, who with his mother and a young sister was partially dependent upon him. The appeal was adjourned sine die, with military service suspended during the term of the adjournment. The deferred appeal of J. H. S. Stuart, transport driver, was dealt with in the light of information furnished by the appellant’s employers, Amalgamated Transport, Limited. The appeal was dismissed. F. S. Phillips, audit clerk was appealed for by Messrs. McCulloch, Butler and Spence, his employers, on the grounds that the firm’s staff was already seriously depleted owing to the loss of their members serving with the forces; and on the grounds that he had volunteered for naval service and was now completing his studies for a professional examination. The firm stated that Phillips was its senior audit clerk, and asked that his territorial service be postponed until other staff members now in territorial camp returned to the office.— The appeal was dismissed, subject to Phillips not being called up prior to January 31. Short Postponement Leslie R. Sampson, truck-driver, was appealed for by his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Sampson,, a widow, who stated that her son was her only remaining support, her health being precarious. One son was on active service abroad, and a daughter had ■had to give up employment and remain at home to care for her. —The chairman, pointed out that total exemption could not be granted, and that postponement of her son’s ser T vice might not actually have any advantage. The appeal was dismissed, subject to the appellant not being called up before December 31, 1940. T. A. Langford was appealed for by his father, Mr. A. C. Langford, who stated that his son assisted him in handling three farms, fat stock buying and selling, and records of the business. He appealed on the grounds of hardship and public interest.—The appeal was dismissed. The sitting of the man-power committee was adjourned until Thursday morning.
