PYRE OF BOOKS

HOUSE BURNT DOWN MELBOURNE, Oct. 1. Piles of his treasured books became the pyre of Mr. Edward Reynolds, aged 69, of North Melbourne, when the home in which he lived alone was burnt early this morning. Thousands of books were stacked so closely in Mr. Reynolds’s two rooms that visitors had difficulty in moving. He was a keen student of English literature, particularly Shakespeare. It is believed that he fell asleep while reading last night. An oil lamp may have been overturned or a spark from the open fireplace may have ignited his bed-clothing. Evidently he was suffocated by smoke while trying to escape, for his bpdy was found in the corner of his bedroom opposite the bed.
