FEW “CONCHIES”
GISBORNE APPELLANTS TERRITORIAL BALLOT HARDSHIP MAIN BASIS The number of appeals for exemption from service with the territorial forces received by the Gisborne office of the National Service Department is 92, and recruits affected by the appeals total 75. Some cases have occurred in which the appeals of individuals whose names appeared in the ballot list have been supported by relatives or employers. The proportion of appeals based on conscientious objections to military service is almost negligible, it was stated to-day. Undue hardship arising from family responsibilities or trade qualifications furnish the basis of the great number of appeals, and in this group it is probable that total exemptions will not be sought or granted. No information is available yet as to either the date On which the reinforcements for territorial units now in camp will be selected, or as to the first meeting of the district manpower committee, which will deal with appeals other than those based on conscientious grounds. It is expected, however, that the first group of appeals will be dealt with next week.
