OBITUARY

» MR. E. W. ELLIOTT VETERAN OF GOLDFIELDS The death of Mr. Edmond William Elliott, at the age of 73 years, occurred yesterday at his residence in Disraeli street. Mr. Elliott was widely known in this district, and for many years was connected with the quarrying of stone for public works. Born in Clyde, Otago, he was the son of a licensee, and in his early manhood took over the license of the Masetown Hotel from his father. He married Miss Jane Beale, and in subsequent years he deserted the licensed trade to take part in gold-mining. He was in the big rush at Orepuki, and also mined gold on the West Coast. Mr. Elliott came to the Gisborne district in 1913. to take over the management of the Repongaere quarry for (lie Public Works Department, and after some time, when the Gisborne Borough Council took over the quarry lie remained as foreman until his retirement. He was a member of the Robert Burns Masonic Lodge, Reefton, for many years. His wife died in 1933. Two sons, Mr. W. Elliott, Opotiki, and Mr. J. J. Elliott, Kopuawhara. and three, daughters, Mrs. C. Greig, Gisborne,: Mrs. L. Windle, Te Kuiti, and Mrs. A. Allen, Gisborne, will be accorded much sympathy. The funeral took place to-day, from Cochrane's chapel, the burial being at the Taruheru cemetery.
