ONE-FIFTH QUOTA
GISBORNE AND COAST REINFORCEMENT FIGURES NO MAORIS CALLED UP The Gisborne-East Coast sub-area has been called upon to • supply a little over one-fifth of the No. 7 area quota for the Fourth Reinforcements for the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, it is revealed by a study of the lists. This proportion is somewhat smaller than that required from this subarea for the second and third echelons. No Maoris have been, nominated to go to camp with the Fourth Echelon, though the district’s quota of Maori reinforcements still may be called for. From Gisborne and the Coast, 1.26 men are to be drawn for various units training at Papakura, Trpntham, and Burnham, tills figure being the district’s contribution to an area total of 590. The area covers Gisborne and the East Coast, Wairoa, the whole of Hawke’s Bay, and the Wairarapa as far south as Masterton, and its quota is made up as under:— Infantry Anti-tank .. .. 15 Medical Corps .. .. 12 Infantry Machine Guns .. 27 Railway Operating Coy. , l 3 Forestry Coy. .. .. ... 2 N.Z. Artillery .. ... 59 Divisional Signals .. .. 4 Divisional Engineers .. .. 35 Divisional Cavalry .. .. 18 Infantry, Ist Training Unit 98 Infantry, 2nd Training Unit 94 Army Service Corps .. .. 17 Infantry Rifles (Burnham) 50 Railway Construction Coy. 5 7th Field Ambulance . . 25 Non-Divisional Engineers .. 8 Infantry Rifles (Trentham) 110 Total for Area No. 7 .. 590 Departure from Gisborne Detachments leaving Gisborne for the various camps will parade for dispatch as under:— Burnham Units.—Parade at Abercorn Hall at 1.30 a.m., Wednesday, September 11; depart at 2 a.m. for Wairoa. Papakura Units.—Parade at Abercorn Hall at 8.30 a.m., Wednesday, September 11; depart at 9 a.m. for Wairoa.
Trentham Units. —Parade at Abercorn Hall at 7 a.m., Thursday September 12; depart at 8 a.m. for Wairoa.
The above arrangements are subject to revision, should circumstances recitiire it, a*nd any change will be notified at once through the Herald. Those whose names appear among the men for different units are advised by the Army Department to keep in close touch with the district office. A reminder is given that all men called up for training for the N.Z.E.F. are required to take both their calling-up notices and their social security levy books into camp with them.
