NEWS OF THE DAY

YVairoa Harbour Board Loan In a recent issue of the Gazette consent is given for the raising of a loan of £6750 by the Wairoa Harbour Board to acquire land for the establishment of an aerodrome in the Wai-,-oa County. Cook County's £3300 Loan Consent has been gazetted for the raising of a loan of £3300 by the Cook County Council. This is part of the roads and bridges supplementary loan, 1936, of £14,800, which was not used at the time and for which authority had lapsed according to the terms of the loan. Science Conference Postponed In view of the gravity of the international situation it has been decided to postpone the meeting of the Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science which was to have taken place in Adelaide in August, according to advice received from Australia. It is stated that it is impossible to indicate at present when the meeting will be held, but the position will be reviewed when the conditions are considered favourable. , Passed the Censor! Friends and relatives are still chuckling over the efforts of a Napier woman resident now in England to get news of the wa'r in Europe past the censors. It would appear from the strain of her letter'that she is under the impression that news of important developments, such as the recent invasion of Belgium and Holland by Germany, does notj reach New Zealand. and having a faint acquaintance with the workings of the censor’s office she endeavoured to pass on the news in the. following sentence: "The Germans are invading B and H. 1 think you will know who they are." With her husband, the woman had been on an overseas tour when they became stranded in England by the outbreak of war, and now they are running short of money and have little prospect of getting any more from New Zealand _for some time. The ironical touch is provided by the fact that they are connected with a prosperous form of business in Napier.
