Victoria League At a committee meeting of the Poverty Bay Victoria League, held in the Bon Accord Lounge on Monday afternoon, prior to the monthly meeting, Mrs. H. D. Humphrey was appointed honorary treasurer in place of Mrs. T. Y. Cuthbert, whose resignation, on account of ill-health, w’as accepted with regret. A warm vole of thanks was passed to Mrs. F. R. Hill, who for the past few months had been carrying out the duties of treasurer. The general meeting opened with a prayer for good courage by the president, Miss A. L. Rees. Three new members, Mesdames K. B. Garland, T. Adair and J. Williams, w’ere elected, A letter was received from Miss J. R. Barr, honorary secretary of the Wellington Victoria League, giving an outline of that body’s war effort. Acknowdedgment of the receipt of a box of clothing and its dispatch to the Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen’s Families’ Association was received from London headquarters. It was announced that Miss Peggy De Costa had placed her shop in Gladstone road at the disposal of the 1 league as a depot for contributions of clothing for refugees. A sewing bee, with Mrs. W. Oakden as convener, was arranged for Friday afternoon at the Y.M.C.A. rooms to make garments for refugees, £5 being donated for the purchase of materials. Afternoon tea will be provided by Mesdames A. J. Barnard and Palmer. The making of an eyeshade for use instead of a bandage was demonstrated by Mrs. Kape, a V.A.D. of the Great War, who is also organising a “bring'and buy” at the home of Miss A. L. Rees, Russell street, on June 7, for the benefit of the sick and wounded fund.
An interesting talk on the St. John Ambulance and Red Cross appeal, clarifying a number of points, was given by Mr. J. J. Macdonald.
