Girl Guides’ Successful War Effort

_On Thursday night the picturesque riverside home of Mr. V/. D. Lysnar provided an ideal setting for the successful dance held by the commissioners and guiders of the Poverty Bay Division of Girl Guides to raise funds to assist the Girl Guide effort in making clothing for refugees. Filled to overflowing, the spacious ballroom presented a festive scene, the many colourful frocks standing out in striking contrast against the ivorytinted walls. Decorations of mauve and gold flowers combined with autumn foliage and brilliantiy-hued berries, artistically arranged by the provincial commissioner, Mrs. L. Balfour, made for an atmosphere of charm to the sitting-rooms. The committee responsible for the organisation of the function included Mrs. R. Andrew, acting-divisional commissioner, Mrs. Lawn, Gisborne district commissioner. Miss W. Lysnar, camp adviser, and the following guiders and Rangers: Misses M. McKinley. W. O’Halloran, H. Meredith, M. Weakley, A. McKinley, J. Peoples, Frengley, N. Woodhouse, and H. Humphreys. Much-appreciated assistance was given by Messrs. D. Leslie and N. Balfour, together with several Rover Scouts, W. Maunsell, P. Sadler, E. Kelly, D. Francis, and H. Nicoll. The members of the Poverty Bay provincial executive and the Gisborne district committee provided the supper. The music was supplied by Mr. A. Pilkington’s orchestra, consisting of Messrs. J. Prentice, J. Gooch and D. McKinnon, and Mr. D. G. Dyer contributed extras. The free services of Miss L. Ruru and her orchestra also had been accepted by the organisers, but owing to a family bereavement Miss Ruru had to withdraw her offer. During an interval Miss M. Hamilton and Mr. S. Skeet were seen in a demonstration of a quickstep, the number meeting with well-merited applause.
