CALL TO MOTORISTS
VOLUNTARY ECONOMY PETROL CONSUMPTION NEW COUPON ISSUE (Pur Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. A special appeal for voluntary petrol economy was made by the Minister of Supply, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, when announcing last evening that new coupons, numbered 1, 2 and 3, would be'available for private motoring during June. To secure a more equitable distribution of petrol, a new horse-power class had been created, he said. The rations for the month would be: — Motor-cycles, three gallons; cars up to 9.5-h.p., six gallons; cars 11.5 to 14.5h.p., nine gallons; cars over 14.5-h.p.. 12 gallons.
The new coupons'were in denominations of one, two. three and four gallons, and were being issued with flic new number plates. Where a motorist purchased a smaller quantity of petrol than was shown on the coupon, the service station was authorised to return him coupons representing the balance. The old white coupons would be valueless after the end of the month.
‘•lt is up to all New Zealanders to help to ensure an adequate supply of oil fuel for war purposes by conserving petrol at home,” said. Mr. Sullivan. “If every motorist in the country wastes just one gallon each month, the aggregate monthly loss will exceed 300,000 gallons. During the desperate days ahead, under no circumstances should we waste oil fuel by excessive speed or unnecessary running. If we have an alternative means of transport, we should use it before using petrol.”
