COUNTY ROAD WORK

WAIKOHU PROGRESS REVIEW OF PAST YEAR (Herald Correspondent,) In a comprehensive review of the work carried out in the Waikohu County during the past financial year, the county engineer, Mr. A. G. Lucas, gave the following figures of new metalling and. metal used for maintenance work in the various ridings:— Wailiuka Riding.—New metalling, 127 chains, absorbing 3120 c. yds. of pn'etal; maintenance, 1475 c. yds. of metal. Mangatu Riding.—New' metalling, 80 chains, absorbing 870 c. yds. of ,metal; maintenance, 700 c. yds. of metal. Waipaoa Riding.—New. metalling, 104 chains, absorbing 2048 c. yds. of metal; maintenance, 1800 c. yds. of metal. Ngatapa Riding.—Now metalling, 44 chains, absorbing 730 c. yds. of metal, maintenance, 1417 c. yds. of metal. Kanakanaia Riding.—New metalling, 00 chains, absorbing 807 c. yds. of metal: maintenance, 1545 c. yds. of metal. Karaite Riding.—Highway, -new metalling, 7381 c. yds. of metal. Motjit Riding.—Highway, new' metalling. 135 chains, absorbing 1030 c. yds. of metal: maintenahee, 2542 c. yds. of metal. In making his mohthly report, the engineer stated that the contractor for 1 top-dressing the spawls on the Molu Front road had made a; start. The pit that was located did not turn out as expected, and a deviation was necessary to get the metal out of tiic pit under the road. He. would have liked to make a further deviation, but the owner of the property concerned refused to let the council have the necessary land, comprising about an acre. Owing to the weather conditions, the Tarndale road contractor had not been able to finish the metalling contract, and still had 15 chains to do. The road was in first-class order with the exception of a, portion between Mr, Fitzgerald’s and Mr. Mclntyre’S.
