National War Effort
Sir,—lt is gratifying to read the reports of the massed meetings being held from Auckland to the Bluff on the apathy of the Government. Today we are faced with the greatest crisis in the history of our beloved Empire." Mr. Fraser keeps on repeating that we are doing everything that can be done for New Zealand’s effort in the war. Surely the first essential in a crisis like the present is the formation of a National or Coalition Government, a war Cabinet composed of men of experience, experience in many cases dearly bought. These men are at hand, not only ready but willing to assist both inside and outside the House and party. A definite lead has been given to Mr. Fraser and his Cabinet from the Homeland. Mr. Churchill, when forming his Cabinet, slated to the House: “I have nothing to offer you but blood and toil, tears and sweat,” and on this assurance Labour is with him to a man. This surely is Coalition in its true sense. JAMES. J. MACDONALD.
