JUNIOR GRADE

POOR PASSING GENERAL There was more open play in the junior grade on Saturday than had been seen so far this season, but the games also showed that still more attention should be given to handling and the sending out of passes in the backs to give the outside man an opportunity of receiving the ball and taking the best advantage of the movement. In many cases the forwards could have shown more attention to packing down and forming a ruck from which the ball could be hooked.

Win for Old Boys A

In a match in which the ball was thrown about well in the open and was played at a fast clip, Old Boys A beat H. 5.0.8. by a converted try and three unconverted tries to a penalty goal. The score was three-all at the change-over, and Old Boys did not get going properly until Cowley had scored twice. Much of the H. 5.0.8. trouble was the sending out of wild passes by one of the inside backs, which did not give his threequarters much of a chance.

Old Boys A (tries, Cowley 3, conversion, B. Calcott, penalty goal, E. White) 14, v. H. 5.0.8. (penalty goal, Johnstone) 3. Referee, Mr. A. Gabolinscy.

Celtic Too Strong

Celtic was too strong for High School, winning by two converted tries and four unconverted tries to an unconverted try. The game was kept in the forwards for the most part, but the tackling was of a poor standard. Celtic (tries, A. Kearns, R. Callaghan, E. Carrington, A. Normington, G. Bel! and Hipi Ruru, conversions, Carrington, 2) 22, v. High School (try, Fyson) 3. Referee, Mr. F. W. Bayliss. Old Boys B Improve An improvement was shown in the work of the Old Boys forwards on Saturday and they held Marist well, the decision being in favour of Marist by a field goal, an unconverted try, and a penalty goal to a converted try. The game was mostly a forward one. Marist (field goal, R. Thomson, try, L. Samson, penalty goal, R. Cowley) 10, v. Old Boys B (try, G. Hyde, conversion, Hyde) 5. Referee, Mr. L. R. Stichbury. Third Grade Celtic (tries, Bardwell, P. McMillan, Back, McKinley, P. Parsons, and O’Connor, one each, conversion, McMillan) 20, v. H. 5.0.8. nil. Referee, Mr. E. Sharpe. Marist (try. D. O’Connell, penalty goal, T. Warren, one penalty goal awarded), 9 v. Old Boys (tries, R. Nossiter and J. Goodwin, conversion, S. White), 8. Referee, Mr. A. E. Ingram
