ROYAL AIR FORCE WIDE AREA COVERED FRANCE AND BELGIUM PRUSSIA AND NORWAY GERMAN PLANES DOWN (I'lpb. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 1.30 p.rn. RUGBY. May 22. The Air Ministry, in its announcement describing the activity of the Royal Air Force over France and Belgium, states that during the day concentrations of tanks, supply columns and mechanised units were bombed and machine-gunned. Roads and railways were attacked with high explosives. Considerable damage was inflicted on the enemy wherever located. During the night’s operations many bridges were blown up or rendered Useless and severe damage was done to marshalling yards and rail transport. Simultaneously other large formations of bombers were despatched to carry out operations on military objectives and key points in Rhenish Prussia. Many direct hits were registered on bridges, railway junctions and rolling stock. The Stavanger aerodrome was again bombed last night. A large fire was seen burning as the British aircraft left. Of the very large force of aircraft engaged in both day and night bombing operations five failed to -return. All day yesterday British fighter aircraft carried out protective patrols for the British bombers over tile battle areas of Belgium and north of France. Many engagements were fought and at least 24 enemy aircraft were destroyed or seriously damaged. Eight ’of the British fighters are missing.
