WAR CABINET
NATIONAL ASPECT DOMINION DIRECTION APPEAL BY CHAMBERS DEPUTATION PENDING , . (Per Press Association.) TIMARU, this day. To make representations for the formation of a War Cabinet .or a National Government and the introduction of conscription and universal service, a deputation from the Associated Chambers of Commerce is to wait on the Prime Minister, the Hon. P. Fraser, at an early date.
This announcement was made by Mr. W. S. Mac Gibbon, the president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce, at the annual meeting of the South Canterbury chamber last evening. Mr. Mac Gibbon said that Mr. Fraser had agreed to receive a deputation, probably on Friday or Monday next. “We do not know what' is being done in the country’s war effort,” said Mr. Mac Gibbon. “I will say that those in authority are sincere in their efforts in carrying out the work they are doing, but I ask if Cabinet Ministers in control of their departments can give the necessary, undivided attention to the country’s supreme war effort.” Mr. Mac Gibbon added that the'country was fortunate in having a Prime Minister who gave co-operation and help and was receptive to what was said to him. * Mr. Mac Gibbon added: “Do not allow in the Dominion anything of panic. There has been a suggestion in some centres that there should be a march to Parliament House and perhaps force the Government to do something. I say that we are a democracy and must not have anything out of sympathy with democracy. We must have law and order. We must not get panicky. It is not British to do so.”
