The Present War
Sir, —People need not be nervous about the present position of the Allied forces. At the beginning of 1918 things looked black for the Allies. In the hope of smashing the French and- British armies before the American troops could arrive Germany made a last attempt to win the war. Between March and June the German armies gained a series of victories which threatened to divide the English and French armies and drive (he British back to (he Channel ports pf France in two broken divisions. The Allies arranged that there should be a single commahdcr-in-chief. and Marshal Foch was appointed to the supreme command. The effects of the change were soon felt, and with Americans pouring into France to their assistance, the Allies made a great effort. In the second Battle of the Marne they drove the Germans back. CHARLES GOWLAND.
