ROADS AND BRIDGES

COOK COUNTY WORK ENGINEER’S REPORT Reporting on recent inspections carried out by the Cook County Council, the county engineer, Mr. K. F. Jones, states as follows at yesterday’s council meeting:— “Watson's Access Road, Waimata. — Mr. Watson is anxious to have the present approach to the crossing over the Waimata River improved. This could easily be done with tiie bulldozer and the grader when they arc in the district. “Bradford’s Drain, Manutuke. —Mr. Bradford and the natives concerned have made application to the council to have certain drainage improvement works carried out. While the council in the past has accepted no liability for the drainage, a certain amount of water comes through the road culverts, and the council has endeavoured to assist, wherever possible. The work concerned, consists of about 15 chains of new drains. This can be carried out by No. 13 scheme labour. “Seymour’s Road, Palcarae. The proposed length of access to Mr. Thomas’ property along -this road was inspected. The length to be formed is approximately 40 chains, and it is suggested that if Mr. Thomas is agreeable to contribute 50. the council to find £SO, and ask for a Government subsidy of £2OO, this would enable the road to be formed and gravelled to Mr. Thomas’ proposed homestead site. Bridges at* Waimata

“Manders Road Bridge, Waimata. — Mr. Graham approached the council to improve the access to the suspension bridge (Tver the Waimata River, giving access to the Baillie estate. Mr. Graham would be satisfied with just a wheel-track metalling, and as there are only eight chains involved this could be carried out in connection with maintenance work in that locality. “Martin’s Bridge, Waimata. No further progress has beefi made with this proposal, as Messrs. Niven, and Company are still endeavouring to obtain a supply of steel from Australia. The amount on the estimates is £I2OO, £1 for £l, and it is not possible to say whether this will be sufficient for the job. It is doubtful whether any real progress can be made while the war continues, as the supply of steel is very limited. Mangapapa Stream “Lytton Road, Proposed Footbridge. —A number of requests have been received for a footbridge over the Mangapapa Stream where it crosses Lytton road. The borough water main passes over this stream on piers, and it was hoped that a footbridge might have been erected on this structure. However, the borough engineer advises that the piles are not sufficiently stable to permit this as they are weak in their foundations. The span of the bridge would be 80ft and could be of the cheapest possible design consistent with safety. The cost for such a footbridge would be approximately £100.” ' The report was adopted.
