SHIP-BUILDING RACE
BRITAIN’S PROGRAMME ARMY OF WORKERS LONDON, Feb. 28. The Secretary of the Department of Overseas Trade, Mr. R. S. Hudson. announced yesterday that discussions were proceeding between the Ministry of Labour and ship-builders’ and trades unions to discover how many more men could be obtained for ship-building. Other yards might be opened if personnel and material were available, lie. said, but. at present 20,000 more men could be absorbed in existing yards Forty-seven per cent of the new ships would be coal-burning. Mr. Hudson added. Most of them would be 5000-ton tramps, which would take six months to build. The Admiralty has established a new Salvage Department. It is taking over all existing salvage companies and is acquiring and building new salvage ships. Already it has salvaged 30 merchantmen! and trawlers
