FIJI’S COASTAL GUNS
RUSH OF RECRUITS REPLACING REGULARS (Reed. Mar. 2, 9 a.m.) SUVA, Mar. 1. Fiji, which has not had regular troops since 1878 when the Royal Engineers left, recently engaged local artillery officers and men to supplement and eventually replace gunners from overseas. There was an eager response to the call to man the coast defences and a high proportion of the volunteer battery applied for full-time engagement for the duration of the war. The applications were treble the vacancies.
