£4OO IN SIGHT

FLAG DAY APPEAL GENEROUS RESPONSE TOWN SALES YIELD £2 73 COMFORTS FOR SOLDIERS Energetically pushed by .a largo body of volunteer sellers, and goner- J ously responded to by the public of Gisborne, yesterday’s flag-day sale in town yielded a total of £273 8s 6d, and additional contributions, several for substantial sums, brought the total proceeds exclusive of country returns to £3BB 3s. It is calculated that the country sales will return at least a further £SO. The appeal, made by the East Coast Provincial Patriotic Society for funds to provide comforts for district recruits, to His Majesty’s forces, was hardly less successful than last year’s Poppy Day appeal, which topped the £3OO mark for sales in town. The Gisborne Returned Soldiers’ Association placed its Poppy Day organisation at the service of the Patriotic Council, and almost all the sellers who normally work with the association were on hand to assist in carrying the flag-day project to success. Creditable Work by Sellers Many other sellers, too, were available, and though those early on the streets were able to take the cream of the response, and made sales almost as fast as they could handle customers, the later hours of the day called for a determined effort. It is to the credit of the volunteer sales staff that the drive was not relaxed until well after the picture theatres had filled. From many sources the organising committee received unstinted assistance. The depot in Lunken’s buildings cost the committee nothing, and the use of a quantity of furniture, provided by Mr. A. F. Barwick, was likewise gratis. Individual donations were handed in at the depot in good numbers, and ranged from 6s donated by an elderly pensioner to £25, the gift of Mr. W. Barrington Miller. Interim Return Gives Satisfaction A statement of the returns, complete to the time of closing the depot last evening, was made by the hon. treasurer, Mr. M. J. White, as under:— £ s. d.
