Fish

Sir,—A great stir is being made through your, correspondence columns on this-subject. There is one-method that has been proved successful, in other lands in opposing monopoly. It is open to the fish users who bought on the wharf to form a co-operative society, pay the producer in bulk for the fish, and distribute amongst buyers at the market rate: A rebate to be given later in ratio to purchases, or the profits could be donated to some worthy cause. We can learn something from Japan where 1,500,000 derive their- living' from the fishing industry. One co-operative society of fishermen there has 10,000 members. Let the Seamen’s and Freezers’ Unions organise this activity and build up an industry that will be of immense value in providing a livelihood -for a sturdy population. The older Maori was a great fisherman and it should not be impossible to interest his descendants in the same occupation. There are many books on the co-operative movement in the local library, including the People’ Year Book since 1933. These latter contain details covering the movements’s activities in every country on earth. ROCHDALE.
