ANGLICAN CHAPLAINS

NEED OF FUNDS BISHOP GERARD’S APPEAL Immediate funds to enable Church of England chaplains who were overseas with the First Echelon to carry on were an urgent necessity, said the Bishop of Waiapu, the Rt. Rev. G. V. Gerard, at a meeting of the military affairs committee of the diocese of Waiapu. The padres, he said, had a big work to perform and it was essential that they should be in a position adequately to care for the men's spiritual needs. Huts in various camps in New Zealand were nearing completion and these would have to be staffed and equipped. It was pointed out that more than one-half of the men enlisting for service were Anglicans, and it was encumbent on members of the church throughout the Dominion to respond in .such a manner that the work of padres and the Church Army would bo carried on. Ills Lordship explained that at general synod last week a conservative budget of requirements for the present year was £II,OOO, but it was expected that as the work increased a larger amount would be required.
