MILL-OWNER KILLED

PLUNGE INTO RIVER TRACTION-ENGINE’S CRASH (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. A tragedy occurred about 10 a.m. yesterday on the Stirling-Balclutha riverside road, when a traction engine, driven by a well-known threshing-mill owner, Mr. Frederick Plow, North Balelutha, toppled into the river and Mr. Plew was killed. The accident occurred about 100yds. on the town side of Balclutha Bridge, at a particularly bad corner where the road curves round a cliff, with the steep bank of the river on the other side. The traction-engine apparently went right over the bank into the river, a drop of about 20ft., tearing away a wire fence guarding the river side of the road. It was found lying on its side by two men from the bridge who were engaged in repair- work, the ■ crash ofthe traction-engine as it toppled over being heard. They managed to get Mr. Plew out. Artificial respiration was tried, but by that time he was dead. Mr. Plew. who was aged 57, was very well known to the farming community of South Otago, and for the past 10 years had been engaged in threshing-mill, chaffcutting, and also tractor-ploughing business.
