BATTLE OF THE PLATE

IMPRESSIVE PHOTOS GUNNER QUINN’S “BAG” Relatives of Gunner Joseph Quinn, one of the Gisborne men who fought in the Battle of the River Plate as a member of the complement of the cruiser Achilles, have received a number of splendid photographs taken during and after the battle in which the Achilles scored so line a success for the Royal New Zealand Navy, the selection including several of the German pocket battleship as she exploded and burned at the entrance of Monte Video harbour. A few of the photographic “trophies of the chase” have been placed at the disposal of the Herald for display purposes, and are now to be seen in the Herald pflice window. They should have particular interest for the Gisborne public in view of the expectation of Gunner Quinn’s return home on leave to-night, in company with Stoker B. W. Millier and Seaman D. McColl, also members of the Achilles company. The men are to be accorded a civic welcome, ; and a presentation from the patriotic funds, at a gathering in Peel street at 12.45 p.m. tomorrow. In connection with the civic welcome, it has been requested that all business houses should fly their flags to-morrow, in emulation of the welcome afforded to the men of H.M.S. Achilles at Auckland.
