NO “FIRST” BIRTHDAYS
FEBRUARY 29 ARRIVES ONCE JN FOUR YEARS There were no children in Gisborne so unfortunate ns to be celebrating' their “first” birthdays to-day, because it happens that none was born here on February 29, in 1936. No doubt had there been some leap year babies born on February 29 four years ago they would have been taken pity on by their parents and birthdays would have been celebrated as usual on February 28 or March 1 until the next official date arrived. Leap year as it is known to-day began in the days of Julius Caesar, whose astronomers in 46 B.C. settled the solar year at 365 days six hours. For convenience the six odd hours were set aside, and at the end of every four years were added to February which, in the matter of length, was the step-child of the months.
