A FOURTH ROUND

WAIROA CRICKET SERIES FEWER GAMES IN SEASON (Special to tbe Hurald.) WAIROA, this day. > The Wairoa Cricket Association’s Hopper Shield competition is to be extended to a fourth round. If unfoieseen circumstances arise and the round is not completed by Saturday, April 20, then the points for the Hopper Shield will be counted up to the concluding matches in the third round. This decision was reached at a meeting of the executive of the Wairoa Cricket Association after-a lengthy discussion. Speaking to his motion, notice of which had been given, that a fourth round be played in the Hopper Shield competition, Mr. E. Beer stated that owing to the postponing of matches during the holidays, cricket had suffered in Wairoa during the season. The condition of the ground was the best it had ever been in. In seconding the motion, Mr. F. J. Holiday, Retailers, said that cricket certainly had suffered during the season. If n fourth rouncj were played, stated Mr. T. Rowe, Rovers, it would mean that the competition would not finish until April 20, and ho thought that the football season would have begun by then. He favoured the competition ending with the completion of the third round and that a knock-out competition be played to wind-up the season. Mr. W. Bilbrough, High School, stated that, the majority of the schoolboys were interested rtiore in football than cricket and therefore he must oppose tlie playing of a fourth round. The view that it was due to the lack of games this season that some of tiie players had lost interest, was expressed by Mr. C. Heslop, Swifts. The chairman, Mr. H. M. Croker, Rovers, stated that after Easter interest in cricket waned. It was unfortunate that Easter was earlier this year. When put to the meeting the motion was carried by four votes to three.
