RUGBY PROSPECTS
CLUB’S SEVERE LOSSES 38 OLD BOYS .ENLISTED Severe reductions in Rugby club membership are to be expected this season owing to enlistments for active service, and an indication of the extent to which clubs will be affected is shown in the annual report of the Old Boys Rugby Football Club to be presented to members at the annual meeting on Monday, March 4. Thirty-eight men who have been wearing the club’s colours for the past few seasons have joined the fighting forces. In the competition games last season the senior, junior B, and third grade club teams were the runners-up in their competitions, and the thirds also won the knock-out competition. Cups for efficiency contests were won by the seniors and thirds. The fourth and fifth grade teams showed poorer form towards the end of the season on account of lack of attention to training. Representative honours were gained by a large number of club members, the captains of the senioi'S, juniors, and thirds, W. Aitken, H. Sebire, and H. Clay, all being Old Boys. Reference was made in the report to the departure from the district of Mr. O. S. Burt, president, Mr. J. E. Mercer, union representative since 1936, and Mr. J. F. Forster, secretary. The thanks of the club were extended to the executive of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union, medical officers, St. John Ambulance, referees, and the press for assistance rendered. All members and supporters were urged to keep teams up to strength during the coming season. The club probably would supply many more members to the forces, but it was essential that as many teams as possible be entered in the competitions to keep the game going.
