THEFT BY SOLDIERS

RESTITUTION ORDERED (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. “It is no good making any order for money from these fellows. The military authorities will not recognise any orders made against the men’s pay,” said the probation officer, Mr. Darby, in the Police Court to-day when the Magistrate, Mr. 11. A. Young inquired about the restitution of money by a soldier who was charged with theft. Detective-Sergeant McClurg said that before the accused enlisted he had been collecting money for an organisation in the city. He had failed to pay in £9 7s Gd which he had used for his own purposes as he wanted to make provision for his wife and family. From the dock the soldier said he thought he could make restitution without any great difficulty to the probation officer. The magistrate said the only satisfactory way was to order the accused to make restitution as and when the probation officer directed. The accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within 12 months if called on, the restitution of £9 7s Gd to be made as the probation officer directs.
