DISTRICT SCHOOLS

TOKOMARU EXTENSION CONGESTION AT WAIROA GISBORNE INTERMEDIATE Means of dealing with congestion in various schools throughout the district, including Wairoa. Tokomaru Bay and Kaiti, were discussed at a meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Education .Board, held in Napier on Friday. The Minister of Education, the Hon. P. Fraser, advised that a) grant had been approved for the proposed extension of the Tokomaru Bay School site, and authorised - the board to obtain a leasehold interest adjoining the present site. A cottage on the land is to be removed, and tenders are to be called for its purchase. In respect of the North Clyde additions, the department wrote suggesting that under present conditions the board should use the temporary buildings in Wairoa for class purposes, which would avoid in the meantime the erection of additional rooms at North Clyde. The board expressed its objection to the proposed course.

The Kaiti School Committee wrote protesting against the discontinuance of the lease of a room in St. Paul's Church, pointing out that the school roll was now 377, and that the official school buildings were inadequate. The board had considered that the school could manage with its present accommodation until the opening of the Gisborne Intermediate School in May: but in view of the committee's protest, it was decided to continue the use of the temporary accommodation for the first term of the year. Te Karaka Manual Training Needs Further correspondence was received from the Te Karaka committee, pointing out the urgent need for a manual trailing branch, the lack of which was particularly Celt in the secondary department. The matter was deferred for a report by the chairman. The Gisborne members of the board put forward requests from the joint committee of their area for information as to the opening date, the equipment and the capitation grants for the Gisborne Intermediate School. Rcouests were made for grants for the purchase of a typewriter and a piano and the committee inquired also if there was any chance of a house telephone system being installed. With regard to the capitation system, it was pointed out that the basis would be 10s per pupil, with an addition of £SO per annum.

Equipment at Intermediate School The board decided that no typewriter or piano could be supplied to the school, but application for other equipment were referred to the chairman, with power to act. The opening of the Gisborne Intermediate School, it was stated, would be fixed at the convenience of the _ Minister of Education, after the beginning of the second term of the year. A letter from the .Ngatapa committee pointed out that urgent repairs were necessary at the headmaster’s residence, and the board instructed the architect to make an early visit and report. The chairman was given authority to 'have ndeessary work done at once.

The board's architect reported on the cost of the proposed work in connection with the extension of the school at Tolaga .Bay. Grading, levelling, drainage and other work on the site would cost, he estimated. £2838 while the cost of extending the residence on one of the properties would be £493. The board decided to advise the committee that the Minister of Education would visit Tolaga Bay in May, and that an opportunty of discussing the matter would arise then.

A requisition for furniture for the new secondary building .in Wairoa, and for the erection of a shelter-shed for the secondary pupils, was referred to the department, with a request that it be treated as urgent.
